3 to 7 digits alphanumeric codes are used in ICD 10 codes for specification of medical procedures. In the set of alpha numeric codes the first digit specifies medical practice section such as administration, surgery and monitoring and measuring.

The rest of the digits mention root operation, body system, body parts, devices used and approach handled. Finally the 7th character of the alpha numeric digits is called as qualifying digit.


In the ICD manual for reference the first 3 digits of the code are stored. For instance, if you take 0C0 code, the beginning of the code will be a medical procedure or surgical procedure done on throat or mouth.
